Today has been an interesting day while applying for jobs. I have seen “do you consume/use tobacco products” multiple times today. I didn’t know they could ask that. (I don’t; I think it’s interesting they ask, though I’m sure that factors into breaks. Somehow.)
I saw an IT job today where the main impetus of needing to work on things was NT 4.0 and Windows 95.
Wow. I was qualified for that 10 years ago~! (I applied. For laughs.)
I’m surprised at how much Apple’s training while you work for them retail side actually qualifies you. It still is valid to this day even though I haven’t worked there for 2 years. And I don’t own a Mac. (not out of anything other than I refuse to have a laptop that is not a tablet anymore and that runs dual boot so I can play FFXI. If MBP came in a tablet face, I would probably be figuring what I could sell to buy it.)
Currently though my Fujitsu Lifebook that is 5+ years old does the trick. If you’ve never seen one of these, go look them up. They’re -amazing-. I really love mine. It’s the size of a trade paperback book, easy to carry, and works reasonably well. I just hope it never dies, because I can’t afford another right now. 😄
Anywho. TO the last part of my rant.
Now.. many many companies use Taleo. I think I saw Starbucks.. uh. Cox Cable.. i forget where all today. Thankfully I had already put all my information in so I didn’t have to do it.
Taleo is a great idea.. in theory. It’s a site that allows you to accept applications for various jobs.
Which is awesome. One login, can apply for any jobs in your area.
EXCEPT….. it’s unique to every. single. company.
So when I log into taleo at Cox, it’s just for them.
This includes signing up to Taleo. I once, memorably, spent 6 hours getting all my information put in, to find out that.. IT ERASED EVERYTHING. Taleo sucks. Hardcore. They constantly are in and out of service. It takes roughly 2-3 hours on a GOOD DAY trying to put in all your work info, school, personal, what have you.
Once it’s done, you will be lucky if it is nice to you. (For example it took me 14 times today to log into my Cox Taleo account. FOURTEEN).
I not so humbly BEG AND IMPLORE taleo to start having a master database where we can log in and put our information, then go to the various companies jobsites, and do it that way.
It would be so much easier. Of course, “easy” and “finding a job” for me, at least, are not synonymous in ANY way shape form or idea.
